Pretoria – The African National Congress (ANC) is holding its 5th National General Council (NGC) starting Monday.
While the NGC is not an elective conference or policy-adoption platform, it serves as a mid-term review of the party’s progress and a space for factions to gauge influence ahead of future elections.
Ahead of the NGC, speculation has arisen about potential successors to President Cyril Ramaphosa, whose second term ends in 2027.

But ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula dismissed succession talks, emphasising that the NGC will focus on preparing the party for elections, policy implementation, and governance matters over its three-day agenda.
“This NGC will not discuss succession; that discussion belongs to the branches at a stage that is relevant, and that is in 2027,” he said during a media briefing on Sunday.
“This General Council is about preparing the ANC to win elections, among others; this NGC is about consolidating the programme of renewal of the ANC,” he said.
