Tembisa – A 30-year-old man has been arrested after a suspected drunk driving crash claimed two lives in Tembisa on Friday, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) confirmed.
EMPD Clayville Precinct officers responded to the accident scene at the intersection of Olifantsfontein Road and South View, where two vehicles — an Audi and a Toyota Avanza — had collided head-on.
“It is alleged that a thirty-year-old male driver of the Audi was under the influence of alcohol and collided head-on with the Avanza,” EMPD said in a statement.
A young girl, believed to be between 10 and 11 years old, and the driver of the Avanza were both declared dead at the scene by paramedics.
“Tragically, a young girl… along with the driver of the Avanza, succumbed to their injuries and were both certified dead on scene,” authorities said.

A 16-year-old female passenger sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital for urgent medical treatment.
“A sixteen-year-old female passenger sustained serious injuries and was transported to Tembisa Tertiary Hospital,” EMPD confirmed.
Police conducted an alcohol test on the Audi driver, which returned a reading of 0.64.
“Officers conducted an alcohol test on the Audi driver, which returned a reading of 0.64,” the statement added.
The suspect has since been arrested and is expected to face multiple charges, including driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless and negligent driving, culpable homicide, and fleeing the scene.
Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
