Garies, Northern Cape — Three men were arrested on Monday, 2 February 2026, for allegedly being in illegal possession of protected species, following a high-speed pursuit on the N7 road.
The arrests come amid growing concern over wildlife trafficking in the Northern Cape.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the suspects, aged 21, 29, and 37, were apprehended after failing to stop when directed by police officials.
The chase began around 21:45, after an off-duty police official received information from the Station Commander about a red Volkswagen Golf with three male occupants allegedly involved in illegal activities concerning Armadillo girdled lizards.
“At approximately 21:45, police members spotted the vehicle and attempted to stop it. The driver drove recklessly in an attempt to evade arrest,” SAPS said in a statement.
“During the pursuit, the complainant observed the suspects throwing objects from the vehicle, which were later identified as Armadillo girdled lizards.”
The suspects were eventually caught and returned to the scene, where they were formally arrested. Police recovered a total of 84 Armadillo girdled lizards, with an estimated value of R123,000, which were booked into evidence. The Volkswagen Golf used in the commission of the crime was also seized.
The three suspects are expected to appear in the Garies Magistrate’s Court soon. The case has been allocated to the Springbok Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit (STESU) for further investigation.
