Cape Town – The Department of Home Affairs has acknowledged and condemned a disturbing incident at its Tyger Valley Centre branch in Cape Town after a video showing an altercation between a client and security personnel circulated on social media.
In a statement, the department expressed regret for the trauma suffered by the woman involved and stressed that no one should be mistreated while accessing government services.
It said, however, that internal records indicated that the woman did not have a valid appointment and may have been misled into illegally buying a booking slot from a third party.
Home Affairs confirmed that its counter-corruption unit is investigating those selling fraudulent appointments, reiterating that all bookings are free and made through official channels.
According to IOL, The private security guard involved has been removed, and the department is reviewing the incident to prevent similar cases.
The department has also warned the public against paying for appointments, urged people to report scams, and reaffirmed its commitment to improving access to services and treating all clients with dignity and respect.
