Cape Town – Closing arguments in the bail hearing of Tiffany Meek, accused of murdering her 11-year-old son Jayden-Lee Meek, are expected on Monday at the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court.
Meek faces multiple charges including murder and obstructing justice. Arrested on July 11, she has been in custody since.
Her lawyer argues for bail, citing her role as sole breadwinner and offering a R5,000 bail amount.
The police sergeant testified that public anger, including from the Fleurhof community and broader South Africa, should be considered, noting Meek’s prior role in seeking justice for her son but now being charged with his murder.
Protesters have called for better policing and attention to the case.
The defence referenced a case where bail was granted in a murder involving circumstantial evidence, suggesting Meek should also be considered for bail, but the police sergeant maintained the State has a strong case against her.
The magistrate will decide Meek’s fate following the closing arguments.
