Cape Town – A TikTok video has gone viral after a former classmate appeared to mock a security guard for his current job, despite allegedly being a top student in school.
In the clip, the man films his former classmate at a shopping mall and tells passersby how intelligent he had been in school, before highlighting that he is now working as a security guard.
“Life is not fair. I met the guy who was a genius in class after 10 years,” he captioned the video.

The video sparked a strong reaction on TikTok, with many users relating to the security guard’s situation.
Several commenters shared that they, too, had started out in similar roles but had since progressed in their careers, reaping the rewards of patience and perseverance.
“In 2018 my former classmate said the same thing about me when I was job hunting, apparently he got a position in a coal mine at Witbank using his grade 12, and bought a VW Polo 1.4.
“Today I am working as a University Lecturer, earning 3× his salary and driving a huge bakkie, and also running a consultancy company. Never write someone off!!”, said @Ron.
“God knows,I’ve got a degree, after graduation I worked as a general labours earning 5k,then promotion after promotion 😁every internal post I had no competitors 😂😂.
“I’m now a foreman earning +40k.same company from 2014,” @Peter moloto said.
“He went home that day and waited for everyone to go to sleep then cried his soul out thinking of what he could have been, all the while muffling himself with his pillow so that no one would hear his wail.
“If only people could know the things he went through to be able to even keep his sanity and have that job as a security, they would actually admire him for his strength, his resilience and will to stand tall,” said @Godless Heathen.
