Durban – A retired eThekwini Municipality employee was gunned down in a suspected targeted assassination at a tuck shop in Mt. Moriah, KwaZulu-Natal, on Thursday.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) said its members were dispatched to Idolofiya Drive at approximately 10:24 after receiving reports of a shooting.
“On arrival, [officers] located the male inside the informal structure. He was shot in the chest and left arm. He showed no signs of life and was declared deceased,” RUSA said in a statement.
The security company confirmed that three spent 9mm cartridges were recovered at the scene.
According to eyewitnesses, “a white VW Polo stopped near the tuck shop. A single occupant exited the vehicle and opened fire on the deceased before they fled.”
Residents told officers that the victim had retired from the eThekwini Municipality and was running a tuck shop in the area. His cellphone and other valuables were not taken.
“The motive for the murder is unknown at this stage,” RUSA added.
Police are investigating the incident.
