Polokwane – The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has impounded at least five passenger vehicles, including three buses and two minibus taxis, for violating road safety regulations during routine operations on the N1 south outside Polokwane.
The vehicles were intercepted while transporting passengers from Zimbabwe to Gauteng and were found to be carrying occupants in excess of their permitted capacity, authorities said.
According to the department, one of the minibus taxis, licensed to carry 14 passengers, was found transporting more than 20 people, including minors. Passengers were allegedly forced to sit on cooler boxes and luggage, significantly compromising their safety.
“Overloading remains a leading contributor to road crashes, and we won’t tolerate it on our roads,” the department said in a statement.

Officials described the conditions inside the vehicles as dangerous and in direct contravention of road traffic regulations, particularly given the long-distance nature of the journey.
The impounded vehicles are currently being held at the Polokwane Traffic Control Centre pending further investigations and possible legal action.
The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety reiterated its commitment to intensified road safety enforcement, especially on major routes frequently used for cross-border travel.
