Cape Town – A KwaZulu-Natal police officer faces disciplinary action after being filmed driving a marked police vehicle without a driver’s door in Durban North.

The door had been removed to free a trapped female officer after a collision with a minibus taxi, The Citizen reported. 

Instead of towing the damaged vehicle, another officer drove it back to the station, violating police protocol and prompting public backlash.

Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi condemned the incident, saying it endangered lives and harmed the image of the police.

Disciplinary steps are being taken against all involved, with further updates expected.

“SAPS Commissioner of KZN, Lt Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has ordered that disciplinary steps be taken against an officer who drove a state car that was involved in an accident back to the station. He says the vehicle should have been towed&Officer shouldn’t have endangered his life,” National spokesperson for SAPS,” Athlenda Mathe said.
