Cape Town – An elephant seal caused a stir in Gordon’s Bay on Tuesday morning after it was spotted nearly a kilometre inland, wandering through residential streets.
Locals were shocked to see the massive marine mammal around 6am, with videos showing the tired animal moving slowly and even leaning on a parked car.

“We’re actively working on a safe and stress-free plan to relocate this magnificent marine mammal. Please avoid the area to help us give the seal the space and calm it needs while we carry out the rescue. This is a developing situation, and we’ll keep the public updated.”
Elephant Seal Surprise in Gordon’s Bay
SPCA Inspectors are currently on site in Sir Lowry’s Pass Road, where a rather unexpected visitor — an Elephant Seal — has found its way into a residential area.

Residents described the sighting as rare and phenomenal, though seals have previously been seen in Cape Town suburbs — including a similar case in 2022.
Updates on the current seal’s relocation are expected as the SPCA continues its efforts.
