Soweto – The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed the tragic death of 18-year-old Simphiwe “Mcebo” Biyela, a Grade 11 learner at Musi High School in Soweto, who was allegedly stabbed by a University of Johannesburg (UJ) student on Tuesday, 6 May 2025.
According to authorities, the incident occurred while Simphiwe was on his way home. Details around the circumstances of the stabbing remain under investigation by police.
The shocking incident sparked unrest across several schools in Pimville, Soweto.
On Wednesday, 7 May, learning was disrupted at Musi High and two neighbouring schools, as learners expressed outrage over the killing.
Tensions escalated on Thursday morning when approximately 150 learners reportedly forced their way out of Musi High School and marched to the UJ campus in protest.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed deep sorrow over Simphiwe’s death, calling the incident “heartbreaking.”
He urged the community to allow law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and pleaded for calm.
The name of the alleged perpetrator, a University of Johannesburg student, has not been released, and no arrests have been confirmed at this time.
Police investigations into Simphiwe Biyela’s death are ongoing.
