Limpopo – The Limpopo Department of Education has temporarily suspended schooling in several districts severely affected by persistent heavy rainfall and the threat of flash floods.
The Vhembe and Mopani districts have been hit hardest, with many roads rendered impassable, cutting off access to numerous schools. Capricorn South and Waterberg districts have also reported incidents and structural concerns that may further disrupt schooling if heavy rains continue overnight.
“To safeguard the lives of learners and educators, we have decided to suspend schooling for two days, Monday, 16 March, and Tuesday, 17 March in all affected areas,” said Mike Maringa, Communication Director for the department.
The department cited reports of flooded roads and compromised building integrity as key factors in the decision. “The safety of learners and staff is our paramount concern,” Maringa added.
Water damage
In addition to accessibility challenges, the department reported water damage in several school buildings, including leaking roofs. There have also been incidents of burglaries targeting nutrition programme stockpiles and electronic equipment.
District offices have already communicated the suspension to schools and circuit managers, who are responsible for notifying parents and school governing bodies.
Isaac Mahlangu, Media Liaison Officer, emphasised the risks for learners attempting to reach schools: “Parents are strongly urged not to allow or force learners to attempt crossing flooded bridges or swollen rivers to reach school. Learner safety is the priority.”
Parents and guardians seeking clarification on school status are advised to contact school principals or local circuit managers. Learners unable to sit for scheduled tests due to flooding will be given an opportunity to write once conditions return to normal.
The Department, in coordination with District Municipalities and disaster management teams, will continue monitoring the weather and its impact on school infrastructure and accessibility. Further updates will be provided as conditions evolve.
