Bloemfontein — A truck driver was hijacked on Tuesday evening near Bloemfontein, but police swiftly recovered the vehicle and its cargo, arresting the suspect.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the incident occurred around 18:30 when a 50-year-old driver, travelling from Kimberley to Bloemfontein, stopped in a remote area about 50 kilometers outside the city to relieve himself.
Upon returning, he “noticed an unknown male in the middle of the road.”
The driver was then overpowered, pushed off the truck, and the vehicle was hijacked.
“Another truck driver assisted the complainant, and the police recovered the truck and its cargo, arresting the 48-year-old suspect on Haldon Road, Universitas, Bloemfontein,” SAPS reported on X.
The Free State police management advised truck drivers to take precautions to avoid similar incidents, including:
