Durban – An eight-ton truck was engulfed in flames on Vincent Dickinson Road in Canelands, KwaZulu-Natal, on Sunday after it reportedly drove over a burning chemical substance.
Emergency responders from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) attended the scene and found the truck’s cab fully ablaze. The driver managed to escape the vehicle before the fire spread and was not injured.
Firefighters later brought the blaze under control and investigations revealed that lime (calcium hydroxide) from a nearby field had ignited and spread onto the roadway, triggering the fire.
Authorities temporarily closed both lanes of the road while emergency teams secured the area and extinguished remaining hotspots.
No injuries were reported, and the cause of the chemical ignition is under investigation.
