Cape Town – Police in Gqeberha are investigating the sudden death of 17-year-old Westering High School pupil Kungawo Booi, who collapsed and died on the school’s rugby field during a practice session last week.
According to EWN, the teenager was practising when he was injured. He received medical attention on the scene but did not survive.
Police spokesperson Sandra Janse van Rensburg said officers responded to a distress call from the school and found Booi in a critical condition on the field.
“On arrival, they were informed that Kungawo Booi was busy practising rugby when he was injured. He received medical attention on the scene but passed away,” she said.
As reported by News24, the school held a memorial service this week, where the community remembered Booi as a rugby-loving teen who was deeply committed to the sport and well-liked by his peers.
Fellow pupils and staff said his death has left the Westering High School community reeling. The school has since offered grief counselling and support for learners and teachers affected by the incident.
Speaking at the memorial, Booi’s uncle said the young player “gave his heart and soul to the game”, highlighting his dedication both on and off the field.
Police say their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the teen’s death is ongoing and have appealed to anyone with information to come forward.
