Sasolburg – Free State Education MEC Dr MJ Maboya has expressed shock and sorrow following the sudden death of a 15-year-old learner during a school rugby match in Sasolburg.
Nhlakanipho Buthelezi, a Grade 9 pupil at HTS Sasolburg, collapsed during an under-15 match against Sasolburg High School at DP de Villiers Stadium on Friday, 10 April 2026.
According to the Free State Department of Education, the teenager experienced severe breathing difficulties during the game and was rushed to Sasolburg Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Maboya described the incident as a devastating loss for the school and broader community.
“We are deeply shocked by the tragic loss of Nhlakanipho Buthelezi, a young life cut short. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and the HTS Sasolburg community. We extend our condolences and support during this difficult time,” he said.
The match formed part of the long-running FNB Classic Clash between HTS Sasolburg and Sasolburg High School, an annual fixture that has been held for nearly five decades.
Maboya said the department would provide support to both the bereaved family and the affected school community.
“We will support the school and family in any way possible and appreciate the swift response of medical personnel,” he said.
Reflecting on the tragedy, Maboya added: “Nhlakanipho’s passing reminds us of the fragility of life. We stand with his loved ones and the school community in mourning this loss.”
The department also extended its condolences to learners, teachers, parents and all those impacted by the incident, saying support would be made available to help the school community cope in the aftermath.
