Cape Town – Rescue teams were deployed to the 22Waterfalls hiking route near Porterville, Western Cape, on Saturday after an elderly couple became stranded in extreme heat, prompting a medical emergency.
According to Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR), the couple had started their hike at around 09:00 but later called for help when the 68-year-old husband began showing signs of heat-related illness and dehydration.
“The 68-year-old husband began to take strain in the hot conditions, showing signs of heat-related illness and dehydration,” rescuers said. The situation was worsened after the pair lost the trail.
A rescue helicopter from the Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS / Air Mercy Service (AMS) was dispatched, with a small team tasked to locate the couple.

“The gentleman was treated on scene by a paramedic before being airlifted to a nearby landing zone for further care,” WSAR said. His wife was also evacuated by helicopter to safety.
During the operation, rescuers identified a second couple on the same route who also required assistance.
“Once the initial evacuation was complete, a medic hiked in to reach them. They were provided with food and water and safely assisted off the trail,” the organisation said.
The operation concluded shortly after 18:00, with all hikers safely off the mountain.
Following the incident, WSAR urged outdoor enthusiasts to take extra precautions during hot weather conditions.
“Start early, carry sufficient water, plan your route carefully and turn back before conditions become overwhelming,” the organisation said.
It added that recognising early signs of heat exhaustion and calling for help promptly “can prevent situations from escalating.”
Rescuers also thanked all responding teams for their coordinated efforts under challenging conditions and wished the affected hiker a speedy recovery.
