Bronkhorstspruit, Gauteng – A violent shooting at a tavern in Zithobeni , Gauteng, early Sunday morning left five people dead and six others injured, Gauteng police confirmed.
According to Brigadier Brenda Muridili, spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng, the incident occurred on 5 October 2025 at approximately 01:30.
“Preliminary reports indicate that two men, who are known in the community, entered the tavern and demanded that one of the patrons hand over his licensed firearm,” Brigadier Muridili said.
“During the confrontation, a shot was discharged, prompting patrons to flee outside, where the suspects allegedly fired randomly.”

The shooting left five patrons dead, and six others were injured and transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment. “At this stage, only one of the deceased has been formally identified, but all six injured individuals have been accounted for,” Muridili added.
The patron whose firearm was taken sustained gunshot injuries and is expected to face charges. “He will be charged with contravention of the Firearms Control Act, Act 60 of 2000, due to the negligent handling of his 9mm pistol,” the spokesperson said.
Authorities have opened multiple cases in connection with the incident. “The Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit has registered five counts of murder and six counts of attempted murder,” Muridili said. “Our Serious and Violent Crimes Tracking Team is actively tracing the suspects involved.”
Police have urged anyone with information about the suspects or the shooting to come forward. “We are appealing to members of the community to assist us in bringing those responsible to justice,” Muridili said.
