Durban – An elderly couple was assaulted in their home on Friday night by four armed men searching for a relative accused of defrauding them of R100,000.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) said its officers responded to reports of gunfire at Oakford Priory at around 19:47. On arrival, officers found a 66-year-old woman and her 65-year-old partner shaken after being attacked and dragged across the floor by the suspects.
According to the victims, the men arrived in a white BMW 3 Series and confronted the family while armed with firearms. They claimed they were looking for a man related to the family, who they accused of selling them a house fraudulently.
The suspects told the family they had paid R100,000 for the property but later discovered that another buyer had legally purchased it. When the woman’s sister said she had no knowledge of her brother’s whereabouts, the men allegedly threatened to kill the family if the money was not repaid.
In a chilling move, the suspects placed three live rounds of ammunition on the table, ordering the family to show them to the alleged scammer as a warning.
They then fired two shots into the air before fleeing. Spent 9mm cartridges were recovered at the scene.
No serious injuries were reported.
Police are investigating the incident, but no arrests have yet been made.
