Cape Town – A robbery attempt at Pretoria High School Old Boys’ Club in Lynnwood turned deadly on Sunday, 21 September 2025, leaving one suspect dead, another injured, and a third in police custody, while a fourth managed to escape.
According to The Citizen, the incident unfolded just before 11:30 am when four armed suspects tried to steal a Toyota Land Cruiser and a Toyota Fortuner from the club’s parking area.
Jarad Frimmel of the Old East Safety Forum said a patron returning to his car was confronted by the suspects, sparking the chaotic confrontation.
“A shoot-out ensued when the suspects were interrupted,” Frimmel said.
As reported by Jacaranda FM, police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that the car owner fired his weapon after one of the suspects pointed a firearm at him.
“During the exchange of fire, one suspect was certified dead at the scene, while another was injured and taken to hospital under police guard,” Masondo explained.

Emergency teams and community responders quickly arrived at the scene. One suspect was declared dead by paramedics, another was treated on-site, and a third was caught by bystanders before police arrived.
Police also recovered a car-breaking device and a signal jammer from the suspects’ vehicle.
Kyriacos Flouditoits, chairperson of the Old Boys’ Club, said: “Several individuals attempted to steal a visitor’s vehicle from the premises. During this incident, a member of the public discharged a firearm, resulting in the death of one suspect and the arrest of another.”
Children and families attending a cricket match at the venue were ordered to lie flat on the field while the shooting took place, but no patrons were harmed.
Police confirmed that cases of murder and attempted murder have been opened, and the search continues for the fourth suspect who fled the scene.
