Cape Town – Zibuyile Madondo, a mother from Umlazi, south of Durban, is devastated after losing her 19-year-old daughter in a mass shooting that claimed eight lives.
The attack late on Friday evening was the latest mass shooting in the crime-weary African nation that has one of the world’s highest murder rates, African Insider reported.
The incident unfolded when an unknown number of gunmen entered the bar in Umlazi township and opened fire, police said.
According to Times Live, Zibuyile survived by hiding behind a sofa but witnessed her daughter being fatally shot and collapsing at her feet.
Her daughter had just returned from the shops when the gunfire began.
“She was the last one to be killed. They shot her and she fell on my feet which is where she passed away. She had just come back from the shops where her uncle had sent her and her friend to buy cigarettes when gunmen opened fire from outside the house,” the report quoted the mother as saying.
Zibuyile, still in shock, is now too afraid to return to her home and is considering relocating for her safety, the report said.
She fears the attackers may have seen her and that she could be targeted next.
Zibuyile and her daughter were relocated to the transit camp in 2010 from the nearby Uganda informal settlements and were told it was temporary.
Her daughter was just three years old at the time. Now, 16 years later, the mother mourns her loss in a community that still lacks proper infrastructure and security. The traumatic event has left her and other residents feeling unsafe and vulnerable in their homes.
