Cape Town – The South African Weather Service has warned that parts of South Africa’s western and south-western regions are expected to experience very hot to extremely hot temperatures this week, with heatwave conditions forecast for several days.
In a statement, the weather service said the heatwave follows a short spell of cooler weather and is expected to affect areas in the Northern Cape and Western Cape.
According to SAWS, heatwaves are defined as prolonged periods of at least three consecutive days where temperatures exceed the average of the hottest month by 5°C or more.
“The heatwave conditions are anticipated due to the presence of a strong, slow-moving high-pressure system in the upper levels of the atmosphere,” SAWS said. “The air in upper-air high-pressure systems sinks and warms as it descends, leading to higher temperatures at the surface.”
The system will also bring offshore wind flow along the western coastline, further contributing to rising temperatures.
“Very hot to extremely hot temperatures (36°C to 42°C) are expected across the coastal areas and adjacent interior of the Northern Cape and the western parts of the Western Cape from Monday,” the weather service said.
SAWS added that the highest temperatures are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday in the western parts of both provinces, with the heatwave likely to spread to the Central Karoo and Little Karoo by Tuesday.
Authorities warned that the prolonged hot weather could pose health risks.
“Residents are advised to be aware of the prolonged period of hot weather, which may lead to health risks such as dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke,” SAWS said.
The weather service urged the public to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, wear light clothing, remain in shaded or well-ventilated areas, and take special care of vulnerable groups such as the elderly and infants.
SAWS said it will continue monitoring the weather system and will issue further updates if necessary.
