Pretoria – Three wanted suspects were fatally shot during a shootout with police in De Deur, Gauteng, on Wednesday morning, according to the South African Police Service.
Police said members attached to the Serious Organised Crime Investigation units from the Vaal and Germiston, working alongside other specialised teams, had been acting on intelligence regarding suspects linked to police murder and attempted murder cases in the Johannesburg Central policing precinct.
“Members attached to the Serious Organised Crime Investigation from the Vaal and Germiston in conjunction with other specialised units followed up on information of the whereabouts of suspects that were wanted in a police murder and attempted murder cases in Johannesburg Central policing precinct,” SAPS said in a statement.
Officers moved to the identified address, where the suspects allegedly opened fire.
“Upon their arrival at the said address, the suspects started to shoot at the police members. The police members then returned fire and fatally wounded the suspects,” police said.
Authorities confirmed that three firearms were recovered at the scene, including a revolver and two pistols, all with ammunition.
“One revolver with ammunition and two pistols with ammunition were found on the scene. Two of the firearms serial numbers were filed off,” the statement added.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
