Upington – A 41-year-old American citizen was arrested in Kanoeneiland on Sunday, 26 October 2025, by the Kanoeneiland SAPS in collaboration with INTERPOL, police confirmed.
The suspect is wanted in the United States for multiple cases, including kidnapping.
“The arrest follows close cooperation between INTERPOL and our local law enforcement officers,” said Sergeant Omphile Masegela, spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape.
“Members from INTERPOL engaged with Kanoeneiland SAPS in connection with an American male suspected to be in the vicinity of Kanoeneiland for serious criminal activities, including kidnapping.”

The joint operation involved officers from Kanoeneiland SAPS, Upington Border Police, and Upington Highway Patrol, who successfully located and apprehended the suspect at a farm in the area.
“The suspect is currently in custody and is expected to be extradited soon,” Sergeant Masegela added.
Major General Monica Sebili, District Commissioner of ZF Mgcawu, praised the collaborative effort.
“I want to commend the excellent coordination between INTERPOL and our SAPS teams. The professionalism and dedication of the officers involved ensured the successful execution of this arrest,” she said.
Authorities did not disclose further details about the suspect or the specific charges pending in the United States, citing ongoing legal procedures.
