Mpumalanga – Heavy rains have triggered severe flooding in Limpopo, ravaging Kruger National Park, stranding residents, and prompting SANDF helicopter rescues from 17 and 19 Squadrons.
Operations from January 14-15 saved a family in Mbaula Village (including a chief from his roof), 18 people from Khambaku Lodge, police and border officials at Phafuri Port, and others from trees along the Olifants River — despite risks from raging waters.
“The community informed the crew that they had rescued other people from the rooftops of their homes and high-lying areas, one of the family members was rescued from a tree along the Olifants River, which is flooded and thus threatening nearby residents,” the SANDF said.

MEC Basikopo Makamu urged vigilance amid a SAWS red level 10 warning for heavy downpours through January 16, forecasting more road flooding, displacement, and service disruptions in areas like Ba-Phalaborwa and Greater Giyani.
Provincial teams are assessing damage for a potential state of disaster declaration, while President Ramaphosa visited affected sites like Mbaula Village.
Officials warn against crossing flooded areas as risks escalate.
