Johannesburg – President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, describing the pontiff as a spiritual leader who championed unity, inclusion and compassion throughout the world.
Pope Francis, an energetic reformer who inspired widespread devotion from Catholics but riled traditionalists, died on Monday aged 88, just a day after greeting delighted worshippers after Easter Mass.
Catholics and people of all faiths are saddened today by the passing of a spiritual leader who sought to unite humanity and wished to see a world governed by fundamental human values.

Ramaphosa praised Pope Francis for his global influence as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church and a symbol of moral leadership. He credited the late pontiff for advocating equality, environmental stewardship, and support for the marginalised.
“As the leader of the Church and a global figurehead, Pope Francis advanced a world view of inclusion, equality and care for marginalised individuals and groups, as well as responsible and sustainable custody of the natural environment,” the statement read.
The President noted that the Pope’s passing, which comes shortly after the Christian celebration of Easter, would deepen the period of prayer and reflection among the global Catholic community.
“Pope Francis’ passing will extend this traditional period of prayer and reflection, which will unite the Church and the international community in reflecting on the Holy Father’s life and legacy,” Ramaphosa said.
Pope Francis, who served as the head of the Catholic Church since 2013, was widely respected for his reformist approach and emphasis on social justice, dialogue, and care for the planet.
