Cape Town — South African Police Service (SAPS) Flying Squad officers have arrested two men for possession of an endangered species near Prince Albert in the Central Karoo.
According to the SAPS Western Cape, vigilance along provincial entry and exit routes led to the arrests. On 17 November, members conducting a vehicle checkpoint (VCP) on Prince Albert Road stopped a Hyundai for inspection.
“During the search, officers found a box containing a pangolin, valued at approximately R200 000,” the SAPS said in a statement.

“The animal was immediately confiscated and handed over to Cape Nature for safekeeping.”
The suspects remain in police custody and are expected to appear in the Prince Albert Magistrate’s Court once formally charged.
SAPS emphasised the seriousness of wildlife crimes.
“The illegal possession and trafficking of endangered species is a serious offence and will not be tolerated,” the statement added.
