Quick thinking saves truck and driver in KZN hijack

Avoca Hills, KZN — A hijacking that began on Malendela Road in KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal, ended successfully on Friday, with the recovery of an Isuzu truck and the safe rescue of its kidnapped driver, authorities confirmed.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the truck, owned by a local business, was intercepted at a traffic light when a silver Toyota Etios abruptly stopped in front of it.

Four armed suspects, reportedly wielding handguns, emerged from the vehicle and confronted the driver and two conductors.

“The conductors were forcibly removed from the vehicle while three of the assailants commandeered the truck, abducting the driver in the process.
“The conductors fled to inform their employer, who immediately activated the truck’s tracking device. An employee of the business traced the vehicle to Avoca Hills and maintained a safe distance while contacting Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) for assistance,” a statement said.

Reaction Officers arrived at the scene and located the truck with the driver still inside.

Upon questioning, the driver said the suspects had abandoned the scene after noticing the approaching first responders.

The hijackers had attempted, unsuccessfully, to access a drop safe located at the rear of the truck.

No injuries were reported in the incident. Investigations into the suspects are ongoing.
