Cape Town – A 15-year-old Grade 8 pupil from Senzangakhona Secondary School in KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga, has been arrested for fatally stabbing a 17-year-old classmate while they were returning home from school.
Teachers were alerted by other pupils, but the victim died on the scene despite emergency medical services being called.
The fight reportedly began near the school gate, and the suspect fled after stabbing the victim in the chest.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane said they were alerted that a pupil had been stabbed and required urgent medical assistance.
“The police rushed to the scene and found the victim lying face up with a stab wound on his left chest,” he said.
“All relevant stakeholders were summoned to the scene and the victim was certified dead by members of EMS.”
Ndubane said that the police traced the suspect to his home and he was arrested.
“The murder weapon was found in possession of the suspect’s friend, who was taken in for further questioning. A murder case is under investigation,” Ndubane said.
Authorities are investigating the incident, and the suspect is expected to appear in court.
The Mpumalanga education department and police have expressed condolences and will provide psychosocial support to the family and school community.
