Free State – Police have launched a murder investigation after the body of a 27-year-old man was discovered burned beyond recognition in Thubelisha, Thabong, Free State, on Tuesday, 7 April 2026.
According to the South African Police Service, preliminary investigations suggest the victim was allegedly set alight by a group of community members.
“Police are investigating a case of murder after a 27-year-old male was found burned with a tyre beyond recognition in Thubelisha, Thabong on Tuesday, 7 April 2026,” SAPS said in a statement.
“Preliminary investigations were conducted and revealed that the victim was allegedly set on fire by a group of angry community members. No arrests have been made yet.”
Police strongly condemned the incident, warning against acts of vigilantism.
“Members of the public are sternly warned that the violent acts of vigilantism are a direct infringement on the constitutional rights of citizens and undermine the rule of law,” the statement read.
“Communities are urged to report crimes rather than take the law into their own hands.”
Authorities have appealed to the public for assistance in identifying those responsible.
“Police urge anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of perpetrators of this violent crime to come forward with information,” SAPS said.
