Cape Town – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape has appealed to the public for assistance in tracing two men who are persons of interest in the murder of 86-year-old Gerhard Ernst Kopatz.
According to police spokesperson Frederick C van Wyk, the victim was found dead on 30 December 2025 at about 12:00 in a separate apartment at his home on Francolin Street, Camps Bay.
“The deceased was assaulted and tied up. The preliminary cause of death is strangulation,” said Van Wyk.
Police said two mobile phones, a laptop and bank cards were stolen from the residence.

Investigators believe the victim was last seen alive by neighbours on 28 December 2025 at approximately 15:45. Surveillance footage from the street captured two unknown males leaving the property at around 16:00 the same day.
“These males are currently considered persons of interest and can assist in the investigation,” Van Wyk said.
Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward.
“Anyone with information which can assist with the investigation is kindly requested to contact the investigating officer Detective Lieutenant Colonel Adrian Pretorius on 082 777 8499 or alternatively call Crime Stop on 08600,” Van Wyk added.
Police are continuing with investigations into the murder.
