Cape Town – Police are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying a man believed to be linked to skeletal remains discovered in Lavender Hill, Cape Flats, last year.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the remains were found on Wednesday, 13 August 2025, at around 15:00 near 14th Avenue in Rondevlei.
“Steenberg police received a complaint about skeletal remains that were found at 14th Avenue Rondevlei, Lavender Hill,” SAPS said.
The discovery was made by children who were playing nearby.
“According to reports, children were playing with a ball and kicking it over a school fence. The children made the discovery when they collected the ball on the other side of the school fence,” police said.
Officers responded to the scene shortly after being alerted and recovered human skeletal remains.
“When they arrived at the crime scene, members recovered the skeletal remains with only white and yellow Adidas sneakers,” SAPS said, adding that “the missing shoe is not linked to any recent missing person’s cases.”
Police have since released a sketch of a person they believe may be connected to the remains. “Provided is an image police believe could be that of an adult male estimated to be between 35 and 46 years old that was found at the above-mentioned location,” SAPS said.
Authorities are urging anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
“Anyone with information that might help with the investigation is kindly requested to contact the investigating officer Detective Warrant Officer Sampson on 021 702 900/22 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” SAPS said.
The investigation is ongoing.
