Johannesburg – Five suspects have been arrested following a high-stakes truck hijacking in Sebenza, Ekurhuleni, on Wednesday, in a swift operation led by a team of law enforcement agencies.
The arrests took place shortly after the suspects allegedly hijacked a truck carrying solar batteries worth an estimated R5 million.
The suspects, aged between 50 and 69, were intercepted along R25 Modderfontein Road following intelligence gathered by Police Counter Intelligence.
According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, law enforcement had received prior information that the group was planning a hijacking in the area and launched an immediate response.
Members of the SAPS Tactical Response Team, Anti-Gang Unit, DPCI Gauteng Tracking Team, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, CAP Specialised Operations, and Tracker Connect were involved in the operation. The team tracked the suspects and moved in moments after the truck was taken.

“The suspects were intercepted immediately after they hijacked a truck carrying solar batteries to the estimated value of R5 million and kidnapped the truck driver,” Masondo said.
“All five suspects were arrested and charged with truck hijacking, kidnapping, possession of suspected stolen property and impersonating police officers. Two cars that were used by the suspects, a Hyundai Accent and Hyundai iX35, were seized as they were used in the commission of crime.”
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni commended the officers involved, describing their efforts as exemplary.
