Canelands, KZN – One person was killed and another is missing after a high-speed police chase ended in a vehicle plunging off a bridge and overturning in a river on Sunday morning.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) spokespersons said officers responded to the scene on New Glasgow Road at around 10:32 after receiving reports of a crash involving a silver Hyundai Getz that had been pursued by Metro Police.
“When Reaction Officers arrived, they found the vehicle on its roof in the river,” RUSA said.
“It was confirmed that Metro Police had attempted to stop the Hyundai on the R102 near the Canelands traffic lights, but the driver allegedly refused to comply, resulting in a high-speed chase.”

According to witnesses, three people were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.
“A female passenger was ejected from the car and found lying next to the river with critical injuries,” RUSA confirmed. Members of the public managed to pull a male passenger from the front seat after overturning the vehicle.
“He was declared deceased on scene,” the organisation added. It was later confirmed that the deceased man was a sangoma and the husband of the injured woman.
The third occupant is still unaccounted for. “Metro Police Search & Rescue personnel entered the river and are continuing to search for the missing individual,” RUSA said. As of 11:34 on Sunday, the search was ongoing.
The injured woman was stabilised at the scene before being transported to hospital by ambulance. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
