Limpopo – A serious collision involving a tanker and a hatchback vehicle has forced the closure of the N1 North at the Witvlag turn-off on Tuesday morning.
According to Limpopo Traffic & Road Safety, the crash occurred earlier today, prompting authorities to shut down the road to manage the scene and ensure motorist safety.
“There has been a serious accident on the N1 North at the Witvlag turn-off, involving a tanker and a hatchback vehicle,” the department said.
Motorists have been warned to exercise extreme caution due to adverse weather conditions. “With misty and rainy conditions, motorists are urged to switch on headlights, reduce speed, and drive with extreme caution,” Limpopo Traffic & Road Safety added.

The closure has resulted in heavy congestion in both directions. Authorities cautioned that travel between Louis Trichardt and Musina may be significantly delayed.
“If you’re planning to travel between Louis Trichardt and Musina, it’s best to delay your trip if possible – there’s a severe traffic backlog in both northbound and southbound directions,” the statement said.
Traffic officials have advised motorists to use alternative routes. From Musina, drivers are advised to turn right onto the R523 until Siloam, then turn right to rejoin the N1 at Witvlag.
From Makhado, motorists should turn right to Witvlag, then at the side junction take the R523 left until rejoining the N1 at Willispoort.
Authorities said updates will be issued as more information becomes available. “We’ll provide more updates as we get them. Drive safe,” Limpopo Traffic & Road Safety said.
The cause of the crash and the condition of those involved had not yet been confirmed at the time of publication.
