The committee is probing allegations linked to KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, and O’Sullivan had been appearing before MPs when the incident occurred.
As reported by News24, the committee resolved that O’Sullivan should return to finish his testimony because he left while still under examination.
During the hearing, members of Parliament reacted strongly when O’Sullivan stood up and began leaving the meeting room.
EFF leader Julius Malema reportedly attempted to stop him, saying, “You can’t leave. Sit down. You have not been excused,” as MPs insisted that witnesses must remain until formally released by the committee.
Despite the calls for him to stay, O’Sullivan proceeded to exit the hearing. “I am finished,” he reportedly told MPs before leaving the venue.
Parliamentary legal adviser Andile Tetyana said the committee has taken steps to ensure that O’Sullivan returns to complete his evidence.
“The committee resolved that Mr O’Sullivan must return and conclude his evidence as he was still under examination when he walked out,” Tetyana said.
Meanwhile, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have opened a criminal case against O’Sullivan at Cape Town Central Police Station following the incident.
According to TimesLIVE, the committee warned that if O’Sullivan fails to return voluntarily, it may issue a summons compelling him to appear before Parliament.
The committee is expected to continue its inquiry once O’Sullivan confirms whether he will return to complete his testimony.
