Cape Town – A Limpopo police officer has been released on R500 bail after allegedly handing back a confiscated vehicle that was linked to a theft case.
According to IOL, Warrant Officer Tikishi Gilbert Makofane, 56, stationed at the Ohrigstad Police Station in the Sekhukhune District, appeared briefly in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on a charge of defeating the ends of justice.
The case stems from November 15, 2024, when the Ohrigstad Crime Prevention Unit intercepted a minibus suspected of transporting stolen water pipes. The suspects were arrested, and the vehicle was impounded as part of the investigation.
However, while the case docket was still being processed, Makofane allegedly took the vehicle keys and handed the minibus back to its owner without notifying the investigating officer or completing the required documentation.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the arrest and said the matter was referred to the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit for investigation.
“The SAPS views allegations of misconduct and corruption by its members in a very serious light,” Ledwaba stated. “No one is above the law, and internal disciplinary steps will follow.”
The vehicle was discovered missing when officers attempted to finalise the seizure paperwork, prompting the corruption probe.
Makofane’s case has been postponed to October 28, 2025, where he is expected to appear before the Leboeng Magistrate’s Court.
According to TimesLIVE, SAPS has vowed to intensify efforts to root out corruption within its ranks, especially among officers entrusted with safeguarding seized property.
