Saldanha Bay – Western Cape police have launched a renewed search operation in the Middelpos informal settlement in Saldanha Bay, as part of the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of seven-year-old Joshlin Smith.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa confirmed that members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), including detectives, K-9 units, search and rescue teams, and local police, descended on the area on Friday afternoon.
The operation follows emerging information linked to the case.
Joshlin vanished without a trace in February 2024.
Although three individuals, including her mother, were convicted and sentenced in May 2025 for kidnapping and human trafficking, Potelwa said the child’s disappearance remains a top priority for SAPS in the Western Cape.
“As SAPS previously stated, even though three individuals including the mother of the child were sentenced in May 2025 for kidnapping and human trafficking, the disappearance without trace of the child remained a priority for the SAPS in the Western Cape hence the investigation was never closed,” said Potelwa.
The police are now focusing efforts on a specific area within the informal settlement. Whether the renewed search will lead to a breakthrough remains uncertain.
“It is worth reiterating that police have an obligation to follow up and test all information that is brought to their attention,” she said.
Authorities have appealed to the public to allow search teams to carry out their work without disruption.
“A humble plea is hereby made that the search teams be afforded space to perform their duties as the investigation continues.” Potelwa said.
Joshlin’s case has drawn national attention and public outcry, with many calling for justice and answers as her whereabouts remain unknown nearly 18 months after her disappearance.
