Johannesburg — The N12 East freeway was completely closed on Monday after a truck overturned and spilled its load of coal just after the Kliprivier Drive off-ramp, causing major traffic disruption in the Glenanda area.
The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) confirmed the incident in a traffic advisory issued on Monday morning, warning motorists to expect heavy delays.
“A truck has overturned and lost its load of coal immediately after the Kliprivier Drive off-ramp,” the JMPD said.
“The N12 Eastbound is completely closed off and traffic is being diverted off the freeway at the Kliprivier Drive off-ramp.”

Authorities said recovery efforts and a large-scale clean-up operation are under way, but the road will remain shut for an indefinite period.
“The closure is indefinite while recovery operations and extensive clean-up of the coal spillage are underway,” the department noted.
JMPD officers have been deployed to manage the diversion and ease congestion, which is expected to spill over into neighbouring routes. “Significant traffic congestion is anticipated in the immediate vicinity and surrounding feeder routes,” the advisory warned.
Motorists have been urged to avoid the area and make use of alternative routes.
“Motorists are advised to exercise patience and to use alternative routes such as the M1 or Xavier Street,” the JMPD said.
No injuries have been reported at this stage.
