Odendaalsrus, Free State – Police have opened a murder investigation after a 61-year-old woman was found dead with multiple stab wounds in an open area near a popular hiking spot on Monday morning.
According to the South African Police Service, officers responded to reports of a body on the R30 road at approximately 08:10.
“On arrival, police discovered an African female covered with a sheet in an open space near the hiking area. The victim had sustained multiple stab wounds,” the SAPS statement read.
Items belonging to the woman, including a folder, a pair of shoes, and a wig, were found next to her, while a backpack was located a few meters away. The victim was declared dead at the scene.
“The motive for this murder is currently unknown, and investigations are ongoing,” SAPS added.
Captain Fikile Makroti of the Lejweleputswa District Detectives called on the public to assist in the investigation.
“We urge anyone with information that could help us identify and apprehend the perpetrator or perpetrators to come forward. Your tip could be vital,” Makroti said.

A formal case of murder has been registered as police continue to investigate.
