Durban – Approximately eighteen school children were injured in a serious taxi accident on the N3, just before Mariannhill Toll Plaza, shortly before 7am on Monday morning.
ALS Paramedics Medical Services responded to the scene, where they encountered “total carnage” after a single taxi transporting the children lost control and overturned, coming to rest on its roof.
“Upon arrival, we immediately set up a triage system and called for additional ambulances as well as Advanced Life Support Paramedics to assist with the multiple casualties,” an ALS Paramedics spokesperson said.
“A total of approximately eighteen children sustained injuries ranging from moderate to severe. They were stabilised on the scene before being transported to various Durban hospitals for further treatment.”
The exact circumstances leading to the accident remain unclear. South African Police Service (SAPS) officers were on the scene and have launched an investigation.
“SAPS will be investigating the cause of this accident. At this stage, we cannot confirm what led to the taxi losing control,” a police spokesperson said.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution on the N3, particularly during peak morning traffic hours.
