Durban – Four children aged between six and 12 were found abandoned on the side of a road in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal, on Sunday afternoon following a robbery in Cornubia.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) said a passerby alerted its operations centre after discovering the minors seated alongside the road.
“A passerby contacted Reaction Unit South Africa after discovering the minors seated on the side of a road in Umhlanga,” RUSA said.
Reaction officers responded to the scene and interviewed the eldest child, who explained that the four children were neighbours from Amaoti.
“He stated that all four children are neighbours residing in Amaoti,” RUSA said.
According to the child, his uncle had given him R200 to buy meat in Cornubia when the children were confronted by a lone suspect and robbed of the money.
“He explained that his uncle had given him R200 to purchase meat in Cornubia. While en route, the children were robbed of the cash by a lone suspect,” RUSA said.
After the robbery, the children sought help from a taxi driver who offered to take them home, but they were instead dropped off in Umhlanga.
“After the incident, the minors sought assistance from a taxi driver who offered to transport them home. However, they were dropped off in Umhlanga instead,” RUSA said.
The children were later located by the passerby, who contacted RUSA for assistance. Reaction officers then transported the minors back to Amaoti, where they were reunited with their families.
“Reaction Officers safely transported the children to Amaoti, where they were reunited with their respective families,” RUSA said.
Police investigations into the robbery are expected to follow.
