Johannesburg – The Benoni Flying Squad arrested eight suspects and recovered drugs, copper cables and illicit medicines during a series of operations conducted between 2 and 4 December 2025, the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed.
SAPS spokespersons said the successful actions were the result of “relentless and coordinated policing” across Benoni, Kempton Park and Brakpan.
According to the statement, the first arrests were made on Tuesday at about 17:35 when officers assisted Community Policing Forum (CPF) members on Benoni Road at Jatniel. A white Mazda BT50 was pulled over and found loaded with copper cables valued at roughly R100,000.
“Two suspects aged 18 and 25 were arrested after members discovered the bakkie was transporting copper cables without lawful authority,” police said.

On Thursday at about 13:00, officers patrolling Kempton Park saw a white Chevrolet Aveo skip a stop street at the corner of Highveld and Partridge Roads. After stopping the vehicle, members noticed boxes of pain syrups on the back seat.
“The 26-year-old suspect could not produce documentation for the medicines, valued at around five thousand Rand, and was immediately arrested,” the statement said.
In another major breakthrough later that afternoon, police intercepted a Scania truck allegedly transporting dagga to Mpumalanga. The vehicle was stopped at the N12 and Atlas Road off-ramp.
“Three suspects, aged between 25 and 32, were arrested when four large bags of dagga worth approximately forty thousand Rand were recovered,” SAPS confirmed.
Further operations in Brakpan and Kempton Park led to two more arrests. “Crystal methamphetamine and mandrax were recovered during these separate incidents involving two 31-year-old suspects,” police said.
All eight suspects are expected to appear in their respective Magistrates’ Courts, facing charges that include possession and dealing in drugs, damage to essential infrastructure, possession of suspected stolen goods, and contravention of the Medical Related Substances Act.
SAPS said the operations demonstrate their commitment to disrupting criminal networks and protecting essential infrastructure, adding: “Members will continue to clamp down on criminality in all its forms.”
