Johannesburg – Deputy President Paul Mashatile has denied claims that he met or intended to meet controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, following testimony at the Madlanga Commission.
The claims arose after police sergeant Fannie Nkosi, testifying before the commission on Monday, named Mashatile as one of several prominent figures Matlala may have had contact with.

In a statement issued by the Presidency, Mashatile responded directly to Nkosi’s testimony. “Deputy President Mashatile categorically denies the claims,” the statement said.
It further emphasised that Mashatile has no connection to the individuals mentioned.
“Of significance is that the Deputy President does not know the individuals referenced in the testimony and has never had any association or dealings with them.”
The Presidency also said that Mashatile was not in the country at the time the alleged meeting was said to have taken place.
“Of greater significance is that the Deputy President was out of the country at the time that Mr Matlala purportedly met with him or intended to do so.”
Mashatile has rejected Nkosi’s claims in full and indicated his willingness to assist the inquiry if required.
“Deputy President Mashatile categorically rejects Sergeant Nkosi’s claims and is prepared to cooperate with the Madlanga Commission fully should the Commission require any clarity or assistance from him.”
The Madlanga Commission is continuing its investigations.
