Cape Town – Residents of Mamelodi have threatened to shut down parts of the city on Monday following the brutal murder of two cousins who were shot and left on the side of the road more than a week ago.
The cousins, 21-year-old Baleseng Moramaga and 22-year-old Tshiamo Moramaga, were laid to rest this Saturday.
Their alleged killer, 38-year-old Tebogo Mnisi, who was reportedly in a relationship with one of the victims, has withdrawn his bail appeal and will remain in custody over the Christmas period. He faces two counts of murder, one of attempted murder, and charges of possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
According to EWN, the civic movement Soil of Africa (SOA) has called on Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi to engage with residents and present a concrete plan to address the escalating crime in the area.
SOA spokesperson Bongani Ramontja warned that the group would bring parts of the city to a standstill if authorities continued to ignore residents’ safety concerns.

“We have metro police, but they are nowhere to be found in high-risk areas. Who is holding the station commanders and police accountable for these deaths? The silence of the City of Tshwane is a betrayal of its own people,” said Ramontja.
According to SABC News, Ramontja recently spoke out against the growing epidemic of gender-based violence that continues to terrorize women across South Africa.
He also urged police to intensify patrols and strengthen their presence in Mamelodi to curb the rising wave of violence
“Our demands to the SAPS include immediate deployment of all levels of policing, including tactical response teams, crime intelligence, GBV units to Mamelodi East and arrest of the perpetrators within 7 days.
“Failure to do so will compel the community, led by SOA, to lawfully shut down Mamelodi until justice is served.
“Inspection and enforcement of all Taverns, Shebeens and Liquor outlets for compliance with municipal and national laws and any business found operating illegally or serving as a hub for crime, trafficking or GBV must be shut down immediately,” said Ramontja.
