Johannesburg – The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has successfully secured preservation orders for assets valued at approximately R326 million, linked to Hangwani Maumela and his family.
According to News24, these assets include high-end residential properties and luxury vehicles such as four Lamborghinis, a Bentley, and a boat.
This action is part of a broader investigation into alleged procurement fraud and corruption at Tembisa Hospital.
The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) has struck at the heart of the R2.3 billion Tembisa Hospital extraction scheme, moving on tender don Hangwani Maumela, and seizing luxury cars, houses and a party boat worth a combined R325 million.

The investigation was initiated following a report by the late Babita Deokaran, the Chief Director of Financial Accounting at the Gauteng Department of Health, who was assassinated in August 2021, The Citizen reported.
Her report highlighted significant procurement irregularities within the hospital’s supply chain management.
Subsequent forensic audits by the National Treasury’s Specialised Audit Services (SAS) confirmed that 14 entities associated with Maumela unlawfully benefited from contracts totaling over R400 million between April 2016 and August 2022.
In a related development, the AFU also obtained a preservation order on August 27, 2025, for assets valued at R47 million linked to Rudolph Mazibuko, another individual implicated in the alleged fraud.

These assets include luxury properties and vehicles such as three Mercedes-Benz cars and a Land Rover, reported IOL.
Advocate Ouma Rabaji-Rasethaba, Deputy National Director of the NPA responsible for the AFU, emphasised the importance of these actions, stating that each instance of corruption exacerbates the challenges faced by ordinary South Africans.
She said that denying citizens access to essential services like healthcare is a grave injustice.
The AFU’s efforts have been welcomed by various stakeholders, including Public Interest SA, which commended the collaborative approach of the AFU, Special Investigating Unit (SIU), and National Treasury.

“The coordinated action by the National Prosecuting Authority’s Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU), working with the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and supported by National Treasury, is a meaningful step toward rebuilding public trust in the criminal justice system and re-affirming that no one is above the law.
The organisation also called for expedited criminal proceedings and systemic reforms to prevent future corruption in public procurement.
