St Lucia – A 17-year-old boy drowned in a dam between Monzi and Mtubatuba in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday morning, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has confirmed.
According to Melinda Snyman, NSRI St Lucia station commander, rescue teams were activated at 07h16 following reports of a drowning in progress.
The NSRI St Lucia duty crew, supported by the SA Police Service, responded to the scene where community members indicated the area where the teenager had last been seen.
“NSRI rescue swimmers deployed into the water to free dive search and they located the teenager, who was recovered to the shore in cooperation with Police,” Snyman said.
Sadly, the boy was declared deceased on the scene. His body was taken into the care of the police and the Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
Police have opened an inquest docket.
“Condolences are conveyed to the family and friends of the deceased teenager,” Snyman added.
