Cape Town – The eThekwini Municipality has urged residents to stay vigilant following a level 4 severe thunderstorm warning from the South African Weather Service (SAWS), predicting heavy rain, strong winds, hail, and lightning across KwaZulu-Natal into Monday evening.
The municipality warned of potential flooding, hazardous driving conditions, and damage to mud-based or informal structures.
“Poor visibility and slippery surfaces will make driving hazardous, and informal or mud-based structures may be at risk of damage.
“The Municipality’s Disaster Management Directorate and emergency services are on high alert and are fully mobilised to respond swiftly to any incidents,” it said.

Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and exercise caution in flood-prone areas.
“This weather alert remains subject to change, and SAWS will issue updates as conditions evolve. The municipality will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide timely communication to ensure public safety.”
Emergency services are on high alert and can be contacted via the Disaster Management Centre at 031 361 0000.
Meanwhile, Johannesburg’s emergency services are also monitoring adverse weather in Gauteng due to ongoing rain and potential localized flooding.
