Durban – A 48-year-old man was robbed of R5,000 in cash shortly after withdrawing money from an ATM in the Verulam central business district (CBD) in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the victim arrived at the organisation’s headquarters to report the incident, which occurred on Todd Street.
“A 48-year-old man arrived at Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Headquarters after he was robbed on Todd Street in the Verulam CBD, KwaZulu-Natal today (Saturday),” RUSA said.
The victim told reaction officers that he was confronted by four suspects moments after leaving the ATM.
“The victim informed Reaction Officers that he was accosted by four (4) suspects shortly after leaving the ATM,” the statement said, adding that “one (1) of the suspects was allegedly armed with a knife.”
The suspects allegedly robbed the man of “R5,000 in cash, which he had withdrawn minutes earlier.” They also took his personal belongings, including “his blue Soviet sling bag containing his wallet, driver’s licence and identity document.”
Despite the robbery, the victim managed to keep his cellphone by throwing it away before the suspects could take it.
“The victim was still in possession of his cellphone when he reported the incident,” RUSA said. “He stated that upon noticing the suspects approaching, he threw his cellphone into nearby bushes and retrieved it after the suspects fled the scene.”
No injuries were reported during the incident.
Police investigations into the robbery are expected to follow.
