Johannesburg – A suspect has been arrested following a dramatic police chase in Sandton after an attempted armed robbery near a hotel on Wednesday afternoon, the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed.
According to SAPS Gauteng Highway Patrol, officers received information on 9 April 2026 at about 14:00 about a white Toyota Corolla allegedly linked to an attempted armed robbery targeting a guest near a Sandton hotel.
Police, working with Johannesburg Metro Police and private security, launched a coordinated search for the vehicle.
The suspect car was later spotted on Katherine Street with three occupants on board.
When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped off, triggering a pursuit.
During the chase, two suspects reportedly jumped out of the moving vehicle and fled on foot.
The pursuit continued until the fleeing vehicle crashed into a truck and came to a stop. The driver attempted to escape on foot but was quickly apprehended a short distance away.
Police searched the vehicle and recovered two unlicensed pistols, ammunition, and gloves. Authorities also discovered that the Toyota Corolla had been cloned and was originally hijacked in Daveyton in February 2026.
The arrested suspect is expected to face charges of possession of a hijacked vehicle, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as reckless and negligent driving.
The two remaining suspects who fled the scene remain at large, and police say a manhunt is underway.
